Quality control for private label underwear begins before sewing and continues through packing. A final inspection alone cannot reliably correct the wrong fabric, inaccurate measurements or inconsistent waistband tension after an order is complete.
This checklist gives OEM and ODM buyers a practical framework for reviewing men’s briefs, trunks, boxer briefs and performance underwear. The exact inspection standard should be agreed for each product and market.
Before Production: Confirm the Approved Standard
Bulk production should follow an approved sample and current specification. The reference package normally includes the tech pack, measurement chart, tolerances, fabric and color approvals, waistband artwork, labels, packaging files and sample comments.
Every document should carry a version or approval date. When changes are made after sampling, all affected files need to be updated. This prevents the cutting, sewing and packing teams from following different instructions.
Incoming Fabric Inspection
Fabric should be reviewed before cutting. Depending on the project, checks may cover:
- Fiber composition and fabric construction
- Weight and usable width
- Color against an approved swatch or lab dip
- Shade variation between rolls
- Stretch and recovery
- Visible marks, holes, contamination or knitting faults
- Shrinkage and colorfastness when testing is required
Rolls with visible shade differences should be controlled so mismatched panels are not combined in one garment. Fabric behavior also affects measurements, so shrinkage and recovery need to be considered before patterns are finalized.

Trims, Waistband and Label Checks
Inspect elastic width, color, logo repeat, surface quality and stretch recovery. Confirm that printed or jacquard logos are clear and oriented correctly. If the design requires a center-front logo, placement must be controlled during waistband cutting and joining.
Labels should match the approved artwork and product specification. Check fiber content, care symbols, size, country of origin, spelling and label position. Heat transfers should be tested for adhesion and appearance on the selected fabric.
Cutting Control
Patterns, fabric direction and marker placement should be confirmed before bulk cutting. Cut panels can be checked for size, symmetry, notches and visible defects. Stretch fabrics must be handled without excessive tension, which can distort panel dimensions.
Bundles should remain identifiable by size, color and lot. Good bundle control reduces mixed sizes and shade variation later in production.
In-Line Sewing Inspection
In-line inspection finds recurring problems while corrective action is still possible. Inspectors should compare construction against the approved sample and review the first output from each critical operation.
Typical underwear sewing checks include:
- Skipped, broken, loose or uneven stitches
- Seam allowance and seam security
- Puckering, twisting or stretched edges
- Pouch shape and panel alignment
- Leg opening symmetry
- Waistband join, tension and logo position
- Thread trimming and reinforcement
- Holes, needle damage, stains or oil marks
Measurements should also be checked during sewing instead of waiting until completion. Early measurement control helps identify pattern, cutting or operator issues before they affect the full order.
Fit and Measurement Review
Use the agreed measurement method and tolerance for each point. Measure garments in a relaxed condition unless the specification states otherwise. Avoid stretching the product during placement on the table.
Common measurement points include waistband, front rise, back rise, side seam, inseam, leg opening and pouch dimensions. Record results by size and compare trends, not only individual garments. A consistent shift across samples may indicate a production issue.
Fit decisions should be completed during sample development, while production inspection confirms that bulk garments remain within the approved standard.
Final Garment Inspection
The final inspection reviews a representative sample from the completed order using the buyer’s agreed inspection level and defect classification. Critical, major and minor defects should be defined before shipment.
Check appearance, workmanship, measurements, color, branding, labels, cleanliness and quantity. Functional reviews may include waistband recovery, seam stretch, snap or accessory security and barcode scanning where applicable.
Any metal-detection, laboratory or regulatory testing requirements should be agreed before production. Requirements vary by product and destination market.
Packaging and Carton Checks
Confirm the correct product, color and size are placed in each package. Review folding, polybag or box quality, warning text, size sticker, barcode, hangtag and multi-pack assortment. Barcodes should match the buyer’s data and remain scannable after application.
Export cartons should be checked for assortment, quantity, dimensions, gross and net weight, carton marks and sealing. Packaging should protect the product through storage and transport without creating avoidable deformation.
