Minimum order quantity is one of the first questions buyers ask when developing a private label underwear line. The number matters, but the structure behind it matters just as much. Fabric availability, waistband construction, color count, size ratio, printing method and packaging can all change the practical MOQ for a project.

This guide explains how underwear MOQs are built and what buyers can prepare before requesting a quotation. It is intended for brands, importers, wholesalers, DTC businesses and marketplace sellers planning a men’s underwear collection.

What Determines a Private Label Underwear MOQ?

Fabric and color requirements

Stock fabric in standard colors usually offers more flexibility than a custom-developed fabric or a specially dyed color. A mill may require a minimum quantity for dyeing, knitting or finishing. If one order includes several colors, the total quantity may be acceptable while each color still needs to meet a workable production minimum.

Buyers should identify the preferred fiber composition, fabric weight, stretch requirement and target colors early. Our underwear fabric guide compares common cotton, modal, bamboo and performance options.

Custom waistband development

A logo jacquard waistband, printed elastic or specially colored waistband is produced separately from the garment. Its supplier may set a minimum based on meters, design complexity and number of colors. Waistband width and repeat length also affect material usage.

A stock elastic can reduce development complexity, while a custom waistband creates stronger brand recognition. See the available approaches on our custom waistband underwear page.

Style, size and color breakdown

An order of 1,000 pieces in one style and two colors is simpler than the same total divided among five styles, six colors and a wide size range. Each variation requires cutting, labeling, sewing-line control and packing. A clear assortment plan helps the factory evaluate whether the breakdown is commercially workable.

Logo and label methods

Heat-transfer logos, screen prints, embroidery, woven labels and printed care labels have different setup requirements. Artwork size, color count and placement should be confirmed during sampling. Multiple branding methods on one garment may increase both setup work and the number of components that must be ordered.

Retail and export packaging

Plain polybags are generally simpler than custom printed bags, paper boxes, belly bands or multi-pack sets. Barcode labels, size stickers, warning text, inserts and marketplace preparation should be included in the initial specification. Our underwear packaging options guide shows the main choices.

Is a Low MOQ Always the Best Choice?

A low initial quantity can reduce inventory risk, but it may increase unit cost. Material suppliers still charge setup fees, sample work must still be completed and production lines require time to change between styles. A slightly larger, better-planned order may produce a more stable cost and make repeat production easier.

The best starting quantity is therefore not simply the lowest number. It is the quantity that fits the brand’s sales plan while allowing consistent material sourcing and quality control. Pashiongarment commonly reviews projects around an MOQ from 1,000 pieces, but the final requirement depends on style, fabric, colors, waistband and packaging.

Information to Prepare Before Asking for an MOQ

  • Product type: briefs, trunks, boxer briefs, long-leg or performance underwear
  • Reference images, physical sample or technical drawing
  • Preferred fabric composition, weight and color
  • Estimated quantity by style and color
  • Expected size range and size ratio
  • Waistband width, color and logo method
  • Logo, care label and main label requirements
  • Individual or multi-pack packaging format
  • Target market, delivery country and required test standards
  • Target launch date and expected repeat-order plan

Providing these details allows the factory to identify which component controls the MOQ. It also reduces the chance that the quantity changes after sampling because a custom material or packaging item was introduced late.

How to Plan a First Underwear Order

Start with a focused assortment

For a first order, concentrate demand into a small number of commercial styles and colors. A focused assortment is easier to sample, inspect, photograph and sell. Additional colors or constructions can be introduced after fit and customer response are proven.

Confirm the sample before bulk materials

Use the sample stage to confirm fit, rise, leg opening, pouch, waistband tension, logo placement and packaging dimensions. Review our sample development process before approving bulk production.

Keep repeat production in mind

Record approved fabric, color references, measurements, trims and packaging artwork. Consistent documentation makes replenishment faster and reduces interpretation between orders. Where possible, discuss likely repeat quantities so material sourcing can be planned more efficiently.

Request a Project-Specific MOQ Review

MOQ should be evaluated against the complete product specification rather than quoted as an isolated number. Send Pashiongarment your style reference, fabric preference, color plan, size range, packaging idea and estimated quantity. Our team can review the project and explain which details affect the starting quantity.
